Joe Paterno refuted Thomas Carlyle’s assertion that “leaders are born, not made”, by suggesting that the only true path to leadership is forged in times of difficulty and challenge. Ryan Michler is a man who knows this all too well. Ryan is a combat veteran of the Iraq War, a father to 4 beautiful children and the founder of Order of Man and the Iron Council. He’s also the author of Sovereignty: The Battle For The Hearts And Minds Of Men and more recently, The Masculinity Manifesto: How A Man Establishes Influence, Credibility & Authority. Ryan has literally built his career and reputation on leading men toward lives of integrity and purpose, and yet, he is most certainly human.
This conversation takes place at a time in his life when he’s navigating some really difficult and painful personal experiences that have, in a lot of ways, challenged how he’s shown up in the world. Those experiences have afforded him the opportunity to reflect on ways he can shore up his own vulnerabilities in life and to continue to learn and improve as a father, community member and leader.
Leadership is a choice. And choosing to be a leader is a difficult and complex undertaking on a good day. But when everything in your world gets turned upside down, meeting those circumstances with humility, clarity of purpose and equanimity can mean the difference between losing everything or emerging from a more grounded, credible and influential place.
